Avocado: A fruit or a vegetable
I just remember a conversation in one of my Japanese Classes about food when suddenly he ( a classmate ) mentioned that avocado and soy sauce is delicious. I was like What?? that sound so weird. He then said that avocado is a vegetable.. again what?? avocado is not a vegetable , its a fruit. He was an american.
Our Japanese teacher ( a volunteer ) agreed with him that avocado is a vegetable. Now am confused. In all my life I know that avocado is categorized as a fruit. Although am not a very big fan of this fruit/vegetable, I still enjoy eating it together with other fruit in a fruit salad or mixing it with milk and turning it into a shake.
It’s was really an interesting conversation about food. So in your country how do you categorize avocado and how do you eat it??

Avocado is definitely a fruit!…
I usually have it in a salad.. or in sandwiches (really nice with chicken!).. oh! and with sour cream as guacamole!!! =)
So I guess it kinda works like a vegetable for me (same way a tomato is fruit, but it serves more like a vegetable)

All of the Japanese I know were really surprised when I told them that avocado is best served as avocado-milk shake.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Like Lisa, avocados may technically be fruit but like tomatoes I eat them as vegetables in salad, sandwiches, guacamole, etc. I’ve never had an avocado milkshake! I can understand the avocado and soy sauce since California roll sushi is often made with avocado in place of toro.

I eat avocado as a fruit and as a vegetable right after living in Japan. Tanabata is right, avocado can replace toro in sushi makis. I slice the avocado in half then put sugar and eat them just like that. My husband first tried avocado shake only after we came to Dubai.
